A Shelter for the Homeless

Welcome to House of Joy!

Bobbi PackI'm so thrilled that you took time out of your busy schedule to visit with us today. Before you continue on the site I have a few questions for you, is that ok? Great! Did you know that the average person is just one or two pay checks away from being homeless?
Now, did you know that there is no emergency homeless shelter in Gwinnett County?
Yes I know it's shocking and sad, but very true. Gwinnett County—one of Georgia's fastest-growing and vibrant areas—has no venue or mechanism through which to serve homeless women and children in crisis. Establishing an emergency homeless shelter is a critical need for this community, especially now, while we are in the midst of the nation’s worst economic decline in 26 years.
The House of Joy will be that shelter! We have already identified a property in an ideal location, secured the proper zoning and construction approvals and have volunteers in place to do the renovations that will allow us to serve 30 women and children for an average stay of 90 days.
I know that many visitors to this site are here because they want to reach out and serve those in need, but do not know how. I pray that once you understand The House of Joy's mission, vision and the potential for life-changing impact, you will be moved to partner with us as we reach out to the homeless in our community and surrounding areas with empathy, respect and dignity. Together, we can be a ray of hope in a family's darkest hour, to make a crucial—and sometimes life or death—difference.
From the heart,

About Homelessness

  • Homelessness is a true cancer in society, destroying what is good, healthy and productive. It shortens lives, kills opportunities and eliminates hope.
  • A mother with hungry, cold or ailing children has a magnified sense of desperation, sharpened by a sense of guilt and despair. And a desperate person can be driven to engage in behaviors with even more devastating effects.
  • When people are homeless they will spend most of their time trying to meet their basic needs for food, clothing and shelter—leaving little to no time for seeking a permanent solution to their problem.
  • Women and children are at a greater risk of experiencing homelessness. This is especially true for those women who are the head of their households and have jobs that pay minimum wage.

Verily I say unto you, inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.  Matthew: 25:40
